The level of darkness and lightness of hair and skin color depends on the amount of melanin that is produced by the body. Genetics generally determine this amount. Grey hair in old days was the sign of reaching mid life or starting with old age. Hair graying can be termed as one of the first visible signs of aging. Gray hair is caused when the follicle is unable to add color to the hair or when there is lack of melanin in the body. The hair follicle loses all pigment over time and eventually goes white.

Ribbed gourd or torai, boiled in coconut oil is another effective remedy to prevent premature graying of hair. Pieces of these vegetables should be dried in the shade. These dried pieces should be soaked in coconut oil & kept aside for 3-4 days. The oil should be boiled till the solid is reduced to the blackened residue. This oil should be massaged into the scalp. It will help enrich the hair roots & restore pigment to the hair.

• Superoxide Dismutase - Are compounds that are often found in hair gels to protect against graying of the hair.
• Shampoos with Omega-3 – Omega 3 are anti-oxidants that fight against degrading of the cells. Omega-3 provides nutrition for the hair follicle to fight against premature graying.
• Melanin – Could also be applied topically in the scalp.
• Retin A – When combined with alpha-hydroxyl acid are powerful agents that give back the hairs natural color.

Home Tips: -

Massage soaked tea leaves or concentrated tea water on the scalp and leave on for about 10–15 minutes after shampoo. Regular washing of hair with tea extract twice a week helps in converting grey hair to black or brown.

Make your own hair mask! Mix olive oil and a mashed banana and apply it on your hair. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes before a wash. Apply this hair mask once a week for about two months and then stop. You can start this routine again after two months.
