Colon cleansing is based on an ancient, though now considered defunct, theory of medicine called auto-intoxication. Up until the late 19th century, the theory held that the human body was unable to rid itself of toxins that accumulated through the digestion of certain foods. Foods that remained partially undigested built up as toxins in the colon, which became the cause of many ailments.
Modern medicine, however, has eschewed this view, claiming that the colon, like the liver, lungs, and other cleaning organs, in fact cleanses itself without any help--that's its job. Still, practitioners of alternative medicine continue to promote the benefits of colon cleansing, claiming a toxic colon is the source of many medical problems, from cancer to bad skin and hair. Over the course of years, the colon has a tendency to get backed up with fecal matter and mucous plaque. This is called impaction. Often, over-the-counter laxatives and medications are used to help this problem. Natural colon cleansers are non-synthetic and come from natural sources.
The colon can be cleansed naturally by eating foods rich in insoluble fiber. Insoluble fiber is the part of plant foods that can't be digested by the body. This kind of fiber adds bulk to the waste. It cleans the colon when this bulk moves through the walls of the colon through a process called peristalsis. This process of small contractions of the muscles in the colon move the fiber through the colon and take buildup on the colon walls out of the body with it during a bowel movement. • Fruits and Vegetables: - Fruits and vegetables, especially the skin, are high in fiber. • Cereal: - Many cereals are a natural source of fiber. Look for cereals with at least 3 to 4 g of fiber per serving. • Whole Wheat and Whole Grains: - Whole wheat breads and pastas are an excellent source of fiber. Some can have as much as 8 grams of fiber per serving. • Beans: - Dried beans such as navy, pinto and kidney beans are a good source of fiber. • Making Your Own Fiber-Rich Foods: - You can add a powder fiber supplement to beverages, soups and stews to make them higher in fiber. • Herbs: - There are various herbs that are used to promote elimination, kill parasites and restore the function of the colon. Some examples are marshmallow root, ginger, aloe Vera and papaya fruit.
