Enlargement of the prostate is not a malignant condition, but it does put pressure on the urethra and can create a number of urinary complaint such as frequent urination, urinary urgency, the need to get up at night to urinate, difficulty starting, a reduction to the force of the urine stream, terminal dribbling, incomplete emptying of the bladder and even the inability to urinate at all.

An enlarged prostate is a non-cancerous condition in which the narrowing of the urethra makes the elimination of urine more difficult. It most often occurs in men over age 50. A non-cancerous condition that affects many men past 50 years of age enlarged prostate makes eliminating urine more difficult by narrowing the urethra, a tube running from the bladder through the prostate gland.

Symptoms of enlarged prostate can include: -

• A weak or slow urinary stream

Although the prostate gland is present at birth, it does not begin to grow until puberty and stops at age twenty. During a man's forties, the prostate gland begins to grow again as natural part of aging. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). An enlarged prostate can also occur as result of prostate cancer or a prostate infection.

The tumor usually grows slowly and remains confined to the gland for many years. During this time, the tumor produces little or no symptoms or outward signs (abnormalities on physical examination). As the cancer advances, however, it can spread beyond the prostate into the surrounding tissues (local spread).
