How is the Diagnosis of Arthritis?

By Dr. Mital John at 2010-10-22 08:55:16
Arthritis is a disease that affects almost everyone at some point from 50 and up. Women are affected more than men, particularly osteoarthritis and, as they say the statistics, 50 million Americans suffer from this disease

The arthritis is a disease that occurs mainly in the joints at the initial stage but over time can infect the principal organs of the body. As they say at the Institute Whitaker, arthritis is now the No. 1 cause of physical and mental disabilities in North America.

In this short essay I will show you the causes which are known to cause arthritis, what has to offer formal health and, ultimately, hope for the treatment of disease with normal means. But let us first briefly what is arthritis and what are the main categories of illness. Quite rightly the Greek terminology, the word arthritis is plural. As experts say, more than 100 form of arthritis. The key, for which we will discuss, is rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and gout.

Possible Causes

• Nobody has proven it appears as rheumatoid arthritis, but several theories are studied:
• Inheritance - Some genes play a role in rheumatoid arthritis, although not all develop the disease who have these genes.
• Environment - There is suspicion that a virus or bacterium may trigger the disease. But rheumatoid arthritis is not contagious.
• Other factors - For example, some scientists believe that changes or a deficiency in certain hormones may assist in rheumatoid arthritis to someone who has the genes and the "stimulus."

Signs and symptoms related to joints

As rheumatoid arthritis progresses, cells in the particular follicles grow and multiply abnormally. This inflammation causes:

• Pain
• Swelling
• Stiffness Eventually, these abnormal cells invade the cartilage and bone, weakening the surrounding muscles, ligaments and tendons.

There may be bone loss and lumps occur under the skin called "nodules". Anemia (decreased number of red blood cells) is another common symptom. Less common is pain in the neck, the dry eyes and dry mouth. Very rarely, some people have inflammation of blood vessels, the lining of the lungs or the sack surrounding the heart.

What can be done to your rheumatoid arthritis?

Recent developments have provided the rheumatologist you many new ways to help. Treatments can be grouped into three categories:

1. Lifestyle

When rheumatoid arthritis is active, you must relax and when not, to exert more. Your doctor should recommend exercises for range of motion, strengthening and endurance. You can also prevent pain and inflammation, using splints for joints and small devices in everyday life, such shoehorn with a long handle.

2. Medications

Today there are many choices, each of which provides varying degrees of relief of symptoms. One of the available options, disease modifying ant rheumatic drugs, may also help prevent deformity and disability caused by rheumatoid arthritis. A powerful new class of disease-modifying ant rheumatic drugs called "biologic agents" can slow or halt the progress of your disease, exclusion of certain proteins in your immune system, which can cause inflammation and pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

3. Surgery

There are now many treatments to restore a serious joint damage and relieve chronic pain. The joints and damaged parts of the joints can be replaced with artificial, to restore the traffic and significantly improve the quality of life.
