Gum inflammation known as gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums. Gingivitis occurs when plaque causes inflammation of the gum line. If the inflammation spreads to the jaw bone is called periodontitis. It is a common condition and can occur at any age.

What Is Gingivitis?

The term gingivitis is used for periodontal disease. Most of the time, it is caused from plaque that attaches to the surface of the teeth. This is in fact the most common form of this gum disease. When no treatment is given, this can turn into periodontitis which is more destructive that periodontal disease.

Symptoms

This gum disease is preventable through good oral hygiene. This should include flossing and brushing each day. Flossing various mouthwash solutions might also be recommended. In 1997 it was discovered that triclosan in toothpaste could help prevent gingivitis.

The easiest way to combat gingivitis is a good oral hygiene daily brushing and flossing your teeth carefully. To control the brushing technique are commercially available special control tablets. Avoid harsh brushing and if necessary use a soft toothbrush. Using an electric toothbrush also has some advantages.
